Apr 27, 2018 · What you really want to do is get a small hardware appliance that sips power. One way to do it is to buy an appliance from pfSense. They are a bit pricey though but you are also buying support which you may need as pfSense is a bit geeky. pfSense is basically FreeBSD Unix. FreeBSD is probably the most stable and secure operating system there is.

RAM 512 MB or more. 4 GB or larger disk drive (SSD, HDD, etc) Dec 15, 2019 · As you guys know I am a huge fan of pfSense. I’ve been running it in my environment for several years and its just rock solid and reliable. The biggest issue is that although pfSense is community based and open sourced, it is ultimately still owned by Netgate and they are pushing their hardware to pfSense users at what I feel is a steep premium (and unnecessary). Apr 17, 2020 · pfSense hardware requirements. Everyone will have different hardware needs but here are some common requirements for pretty much any build: The CPU should support AES-NI. This is an encryption instruction set that helps pfSense performance, especially with VPNs. pfSense may one day require AES-NI. Hardware requirements CPU requirements are very difficult to specify because of the wildly different requirements and use-cases. For example, if you run a VPN server for 500 people, but all they do is use it to reach one web server through the VPN server, then requirements are a lot lower than running the same server but redirecting all their
Sep 06, 2016 · Hardware sizing guidelines. The minimum hardware requirements are general guidelines, and you may want to exceed these minimums based on different factors. It may be useful to consider these factors when determining what CPU, memory, and storage device to use. For the CPU, requirements increase for faster Internet connections. While many companies offer nice hardware, I'd like to take this opportunity to ask you to consider buying from one of our partners who help and contribute to the project. All our partners make significant contributions and some of them offer great hardware / turn-key appliances with OPNsense. There's too many great features to list in a summary. In two years of using pfSense, it's needed one reboot to function correctly. It's not the easiest router in the world to configure unless you're a network administrator, as it's designed for enterprise more so than a home network. pfSense hardware sizing would be extremely difficult to predict as it varies a great deal based on the network card(s) and driver(s) efficiency. Extremely poor performance has been observed using high end hardware and also exceptionally good performance can be the case with minimal hardware, throughput greatly affected by very small variables.
